Star Fox Levels Explained through Static Graphics
These tiles were designed for a documentary on the Super Nintendo game, Star Fox. The goal was to illustrate an abstract coding concept in which the game's levels were built using an event array rather than a modern 3D level model. They were inspired by the level layout illustrations for the game found in Nintendo Power magazines of the early 90's.
Mobility in the end product, as illustrated in the above gif, was the driving force behind the design. Each piece needed to fit together like a puzzle whilst being interchangable to meet the need of the documentary. Each platform face is specifically colored to match the example illustration from Nintendo Power magazine.
Elements, like the red and blue triangles on the right, needed to be designed separately from the platforms in order for the level design to be fully demostrated. Other elements, like the arch in the above platform graphic, could be integrated into the platform.
